Potato!! hearing this first thing that comes in our mind is that it is worst food for our health.
 But this is not true, it can be healthy depending on preparation method. People consider potato so common that they are not worthy to talk. 
But according to German people they are excellent food who solve their problems. It is a vegetable which contains many nutrients. It is a starchy vegetable.


The majority of the nutrients in the potato are in the skin, and a half an inch into the potato so it is recommended not to peel the potato and throw its skin. In-fact potatoes can be put in the diet for abs but should be consumed in moderation.It is totally wrong that more potatoes you eat the more muscle you will gain. 


Some myths about potato:

  • The potato is not a vegetable:
           It is a tuberous root is classified as a vegetable. It is also referred as edible root or tuber. 

  • Potatoes are fattening:
          It is about 80% water and 20% solid and contains high nutritional value .A raw or baked potato with skin normally contains 100 calories, 22g carbohydrates, 3g of protein and NO fat. 

  • Potatoes contain simple carbohydrates:

         Contains complex carbohydrates which are very essential for the brain and body. This is the main source of energy in our body.

  • All of potato's nutrients are present in it's skin:
          Almost most of the protein content lies with in the layer of the skin but other nutrients are distributed across the body and skin of the potato.

  • Potato taste nice only when cooked according to high-fat recipes-
          If potatoes are cooked in oil and other fatty products then it is not good for health. Without these fats potatoes can be cooked and at the end result comes to be a very tasty dish with low fat and high carb.

         Types of Potatoes:
           

  • Russets potatoes- Also called starchy or chef potato.They are high in starch and have brown skin.They are mainly used for baking. They have low moisture content

  • Long whites - They are oval and have light brown skin with tiny eyes. They are also known as white rose mainly good for pan frying and boiling.

  • Round reds-They have a rosy red skin with low starch content and have a sweet flavour. They are also called new potatoes. Mainly used for boiling, roasting.

There are some bad effects of potatoes also :
White potatoes are like white sugar and white bread. They increase the blood sugar levels and raise level of triglycerides and decrease the good cholesterol(HDL)  levels in our body. This may increase the risk of heart attack.

They should be treated like candy and desserts and should be taken in right amount.

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B6
  • Copper
  • Potassium
  • Manganese
  • Dietary fiber
